The Andes

The longest mountain range in the world has its northernmost section in Venezuela, comprising snowy peaks up to 5000 metres, high altitude grasslands (paramo) with strange plant life, and lush cloud forests at lower elevations containing such treats as displaying cock-of-the-rock. The capital city, Merida, boasts the world’s longest cable car, and there are stunning landscapes and numerous picturesque colonial villages to explore. The majestic condor can sometimes be seen soaring high overhead. The area may be explored by car or by hiking the many scenic trails – take your pick.

  Spa Hotel La Sevillana
Set on the outskirts of Merida in sixty-five acres of lush sub tropical woodland with plenty of birdlife, the hotel is very comfortable and offers spa treatments.

  Hotel Los Frailes
Incorporating a 17th Century Franciscan monastery, the long-established hotel is remote and provides a good base when travelling the length of the Venezuelan Andes from Merida down to Barinas, gateway to Los Llanos.
