Los Llanos

The immense, seasonally flooded flatlands of central Venezuela are a northern version of Brazil’s Pantanal, containing large cattle ranches and many of the same species. These include jaguar, ocelot, puma, giant anaconda, giant anteater, caiman, hoatzin, pink river dolphin, giant otter, river otter, macaw, jabiru, wood and maguari storks, and the ubiquitous capybara, the world’s largest rodent. The wildlife is prolific and easily observed, and real cowboys will also be encountered while staying on our working ranches cum wildlife lodges.

Hato El Cedral
Situated right in the heart of Los Llanos, this working ranch has pleasant rooms and a pool – it also has a private airstrip in case one wishes to arrive by charter flight. Excursions are by boat and converted truck, along rivers (and flooded ranch land in the wet season) and raised dirt roads, and the wildlife is abundant and easily seen. Past clients have seen jaguar here, as well as a ten metre-long anaconda..

Hato Pinero
Located in the northern limits of Los Llanos and more easily reached than Cedral, Pinero enjoys a varied topography of hills, rivers and plains. The historic ranch has atmospheric colonial rooms, and provides daily guided game drives and boat trips. We have seen ocelot here twice and much else besides.
