Islands & Coasts

Tanzania boasts East Africa’s only game park with ocean frontage, and offshore islands with superb snorkelling and diving.  The legendary spice island of Zanzibar offers superb beaches, a lush interior, an historic town, and a fascinating mix of African and Arabian cultures.

Saadani National Park

Tanzania’s newest national park and the only one in East Africa with ocean frontage, Saadani offers a unique mix of big game, rivers and beaches.  Land animals include hippos, wildebeest, zebra, eland, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, lion and the rare Roosevelt's sable antelope, whilst dolphins frolic and humpback whales migrate in the Zanzibar channel, just offshore.  Green turtles nest on the beach and there is good snorkelling to be enjoyed in the warm waters of the Indian Ocean.

Saadani Safari Lodge
On the beach just outside the national park, exclusive Saadani has tent-and-thatch beachfront bandas with en suite facilities, large balconies and hammocks.  There are a bar and restaurant serving wonderful seafood.

Mafia Island National Park.

Located a short flight from Zanzibar or Dar Es Salaam,  this delightful archipelago of tiny islands, extensive coral reefs and beautiful white sand beaches provides excellent snorkelling and diving. Much quieter than Zanzibar, Mafia is wonderfully unspoilt with some attractive accommodation options.

Pole Pole
A small luxury lodge with exquisitely decorated thatched bungalows having wooden floors, Italian textiles, large verandas, en suite bathrooms and excellent food and service. There is a small white sand beach and great views to Chole, Juani and Jibondo Islands.

Chole Mjini
Run according to strict environmental guidelines and directly benefiting the local community, the lodge offers stylish accommodation set in the boughs of huge baobab trees. There are composting toilets and showers heated by coconut oil, but no electricity or beach. Enjoy great diving and snorkelling, village visits and a very quiet location.

Zanzibar

In fact an archipelago of islands incorporating Unguja to the south and Pemba to the north, Zanzibar has been captivating travellers for centuries.  Its Arabian origins are reflected in the historic capital, Stone Town, a fascinating warren of narrow streets, overhanging balconies and huge, intricately carved wooden doors.  Zanzibar has superb white sand beaches and some of the best snorkelling and diving in Africa, Pemba being particularly good. The main island’s interior is a colourful mix of spice plantations and rainforests inhabited by bush babies and the endemic Zanzibar red colobus monkey.

Zanzibar Serena Inn
Located in Stone Town overlooking the ocean, the hotel offers comfortable accommodation while retaining much its original character. There are an excellent pool, restaurant and bar which all face west affording beautiful sunset views of white-sailed dhows returning to port.

Breezes Beach Club
Set on a beautiful white sand beach with coconut palms and lush tropical gardens, the luxury hotel has air-conditioned, colonial-style rooms beautifully decorated with local woods and textiles.  There are a large swimming pool, beach bar, restaurant and PADI dive centre offering diving and snorkelling on the fringing coral reef. The gardens attract many birds and butterflies, and bush babies come at night to feed on unattended fruit - beware your nocturnal bananas!

Fundu Lagoon
Among the most stylish resorts in Africa, Fundu has a beautiful beach and world class diving and snorkelling in Pemba’s only dedicated marine reserve.  Accommodation is in detached safari-style luxury cabins with large balconies, tented sleeping areas and en suite bathrooms.
