The South East The South West Coast The Cultural Triangle The Hill Country Testimonials

The South West Coast

The road running from north of Colombo and following the coast all the way to Hambantota is the busiest in Sri Lanka. Along this route are found most of the beach hotels and resorts, turtle hatcheries, the famous stilt fishermen and Galle with its World Heritage Dutch fort. Inland are some excellent wildlife reserves, as well as the famous elephant orphanage at Pinnawala.

Ranweli Resort
Only accessible via pontoon ferry, the resort, near Waikkal just north of Colombo, has a near-private beach, plenty of sports options, pleasant bungalows and waterways perfect for nature boat trips.

Privilege Hotel
A very comfortable beachfront hotel south of Colombo at Wadduwa, with well-appointed rooms, large pool, attentive service and good cooking. A clients’ firm favourite.

Galle
The town holds a very special World Heritage Site, Galle fort and Old Town. Built on a promontory by the Dutch four centuries ago, it contains many well-preserved colonial buildings and exudes a profound sense of history. One can walk the high walls and enjoy the views out to sea, or wander the old cobble streets soaking in the atmosphere.

Closenburg Hotel
The hotel’s main building is an authentic Dutch colonial mansion, enjoying a perfect setting overlooking the sea in Galle harbour, near the fort.

Uda Walawe National Park

Renowned as the best place in Asia for observing wild elephant, the park is also excellent for raptors.

Sinharaja Forest Reserve

Covering a mere 112 square kilometres, Sri Lanka’s only biological World Heritage Site is the last significant fragment of undisturbed rainforest left on the island. It has a high endemicity of trees, oddities such as the purple-faced leaf monkey (also endemic), and is famed among birdwatchers for mixed feeding flocks and for protecting the majority of the island’s endemic bird species. A priceless and rare natural jewel.

Boulder Garden
A remarkable boutique hotel built into a jumble of huge granite boulders bordered by rampant greenery. A comfortable caveman experience to rival the Flintstones.
