The South West CoastThe road running from north of Colombo and following the coast all the way to Hambantota is the busiest in Sri Lanka. Along this route are found most of the beach hotels and resorts, turtle hatcheries, the famous stilt fishermen and Galle with its World Heritage Dutch fort. Inland are some excellent wildlife reserves, as well as the famous elephant orphanage at Pinnawala.
Uda Walawe National ParkRenowned as the best place in Asia for observing wild elephant, the park is also excellent for raptors. Sinharaja Forest ReserveCovering a mere 112 square kilometres, Sri Lanka’s only biological World Heritage Site is the last significant fragment of undisturbed rainforest left on the island. It has a high endemicity of trees, oddities such as the purple-faced leaf monkey (also endemic), and is famed among birdwatchers for mixed feeding flocks and for protecting the majority of the island’s endemic bird species. A priceless and rare natural jewel.
