The South East The South West Coast The Cultural Triangle The Hill Country Testimonials

The South East

A rugged and wild part of the island, this region is a haven for flora and fauna, especially in Yala National Park. The beaches – long and windswept, with dangerous currents and crashing waves (no swimming allowed) – are backed by large sand dunes giving rise to lagoons, woodland and scrub bush.

Yala (Ruhuna) National Park

The premier wildlife location in Sri Lanka, Yala offers an almost African safari experience as well as an important Buddhist temple site. On game drives by jeep, one can usually view wild elephant, buffalo and boar, huge monitor lizards, macaque monkeys and many rare and endemic bird species: it is also the best place in south Asia to spot the elusive leopard, often seen and admired.

Yala Village
Situated between Yala and the south coast in 10 acres of wooded land, the well-run lodge has comfortable bungalows, pool and observation tower for wildlife viewing.

Kumbuk River Lodge
Nominated for the World Travel Awards 2007 for its ecologically sensitive construction and ethos, the small lodge is set by a river within easy reach of the north entrance to Yala and exudes simple yet natural charm.

Bundala National Park

Chiefly a birding site, the 6,200 hectares of lagoon and scrub bush also harbour elephant and crocodile, and turtles come ashore to nest on the beach. It boasts two avian endemics: brown-capped babbler and Sri Lanka jungle fowl.
