Volcanoes National Park

Bordering Uganda to the north and the Democratic Republic of Congo to the west, this 13,000 hectare national park is the centre of one of the world’s great wildlife highlights.  Made famous by Dian Fossey, the habituated mountain gorillas enthral visitors with their gentle power, intelligence and playful antics.  The gorilla trekking operation is extremely well organised and the resultant income, together with the twenty-four hour protection this affords, has undoubtedly helped keep these awesome yet endearing apes from extinction. The park is an area of outstanding beauty with its skyline of volcanic cones ringed by forests giving way to fertile farming terraces.  In addition to gorillas, there is plenty here to enthral the wildlife enthusiast including habituated golden monkeys, elephants, buffalos and around 180 species of bird including 13 endemic species.

Enjoying a rural setting in a grove of eucalyptus trees with wonderful views of the peaks of the Volcanoes National Park.  Rooms are of traditional stone construction, many benefiting from stunning views during clear weather.  There are a good bar and dining room with open fires to  keep away the evening chill.

An African Primates Extravaganza

Important Notes

IMPORTANT NOTE: All clients must note the following points - bookings will only be accepted on condition that these points are understood, accepted and adhered to:
1) The security situation can change, as it can in most African countries.
2) The gorillas’ health is strictly protected - no-one with a visible cold or other transmissible disease is allowed to visit them. Guides check before entering the park that everyone appears healthy, so entry cannot be guaranteed: if someone is obviously ill, or has a cold, he or she will be turned away with no refund given.
3) It can be a difficult climb to reach the gorillas, and the descent may be hard. Anyone who is fit, active and well with
no mobility problems should manage. Although guides and porters are on hand to assist, anyone who appears unable to manage the climb may have to turn back early – in any dispute, the decision of the guide is final.
