Nyungwe Forest National ParkOccupying 970 square kilometres of rainforested valleys in the remote southwest corner of Rwanda, Nyungwe has the largest area of intact montane rainforest in east and central Africa. The stunning landscape supports a high biodiversity including 86 mammal species, 280 species of birds (including 26 endemics), 5 species of chameleon and 120 butterflies. Nyungwe is particularly noted for its 13 species of primates including eight species of monkey and a healthy population of chimpanzees, some semi-habituated. The chimps are still a little wary of people and they have a huge range to wander, so sightings are not as reliable as the gorillas in the north. However, exciting encounters do frequently occur, particularly when the chimpanzees are engrossed in feeding from fruiting trees (most common in the rainy season). An extensive network of rainforest trails lead to picturesque waterfalls and natural springs, one said to be the true source of the Nile. A large number of other primates are often seen including l’Hoest’s monkey, vervet monkeys, silver monkeys and Ruwenzori colobus.

We have been to some stunning places before (many of them through you), but Rwanda captivated us in so many different ways that it beats the lot! We expected, of course, to be wowed by the gorillas - but they managed to exceed our expectations. To be so close to such awesome creatures in the wild is not an experience we are likely to forget. What really took us by surprise was the warmth of the welcome that we received from the people...The country itself is beautiful...so much diversity... We could not have asked for a better team. Mr & Mrs R Mc C – London.
