The Lowlands

SEPIK RIVER

At 1126 kilometres in length, the Sepik is the longest river in New Guinea and one of the world's great waterways. From its central highlands source to the Bismark Sea, much of its length is navigable. The people living along its banks are highly dependent on the river for transportation and food, and well known for their magnificent wood carvings and art works. Young men from the Middle Sepik still endure intiation rites involving scarification, part of an ancient practice still retained to this day.

  Karawari Lodge
Perched upon an isolated ridge in the midst of huge expanses of lowland rainforest in one of the most remote areas of the country, this attractive lodge can only be reached by boat and light aircraft. Accommodation is in rustic though comfortable cottages built of bush materials, and the main building, in the shape of a haus tambaran, (a spirit house of the local Arambak people), contains a dining area, lounge and bar.

MV Sepik Spirit

An odd-looking boat purpose-built for cruising the shallow waters of the mighty Sepik River, with a shallow draft, full air-conditioning, dining room, lounge, bar and observation deck. Three-night cruises enable exploration of the Karawari River, Blackwater Lakes, Chambri Lakes and the Middle and Upper Sepik areas.  Village visits are possible  using small river boats, providing opportunities for passengers to experience traditional art and culture  in an area rarely visited  by others.

BENSBACH

Located in Western Province close to the border with the Indonesian part of New Guinea island, this remote and sparsely populated region has vast floodplains teeming with wildlife including rusa deer, wallabies, crocodiles and monitor lizards. Prolific bird life includes pygmy geese and sea eagles, and the many other migratory species which stop here on their travels.

  Bensbach Wildlife Lodge
Situated in the Tonda Wildlife Management Area at the mouth of the Bensbach River, the lodge is built entirely of local materials so blends in well with its surroundings. Accommodation is simple but comfortable, with a dining room, bar and relaxing lounge area.  Daily excursions by boat allow visitors to view the abundant bird and wildlife of the area, as well as visit local villages.
