Papua New Guinea The Highlands

The Lowlands

The Coast and Islands Testimonials

The Highlands

First explored by Europeans in the 1930s, the highlands have only recently developed better accessibility. The dramatic scenery consists of a series of rainforested mountains, valleys, rivers and streams, with altitude generally over 2000 metres. The five highland provinces are some of PNG's most densely populated regions, well known for their coffee plantations, colourful tribes and species of birds of paradise.

Southern Highlands

A remote and underdeveloped province where the tribes have retained their traditional cultures, particularly in the Tari Basin. Tari is one of the few places in PNG where tribes habitually wear traditional dress and retain their customs intact, observed on visits to the Huli Wigmen, the largest ethnic group in the Southern Highlands. The Tari Gap is very popular for birdwatching, with 13 species of birds of paradise found in the cloud forest there.

  Ambua Lodge
Set at 7000ft and offering stunning views of the Tari Valley below, the lodge is an inspired example of environmentally sensitive building. Guests are accommodated in individual thatched bungalows built in traditional highlands style, and a small hydro-electric unit supplies the electricity. Ambua is a perfect base from which to explore neighbouring Huli villages, and nature walks taken around the lodge and at the Tari Gap offer excellent chances for bird of paradise sightings.

Western Highlands

With habitats ranging from lowland forest to alpine grasslands and coffee plantations  dominating the fertile valleys, this is one of the most agriculturally productive regions of PNG. Sing-sings are an important part of life for the local Waghi tribe, in which clans regularly gather for ritual singing and dancing ceremonies.

Mount Hagen

Located in the Waghi valley, Mount Hagen is the capital of the Western Highlands Province. First visited by westerners in 1933, the area has developed at a fast pace, so that now Mount Hagen is the main gateway to the Highlands and the Sepik area. The town is most famous for its cultural show, held annually in August, in which tribes and clans from across the country gather to compete in dance contests in flamboyant traditional costumes.

Rondon Ridge

Located at 7000 feet overlooking Mount Hagen, the lodge provides magnificent vistas of the Hagen range, and each well-appointed room has 180-degree views over the Waghi valley. From the lodge, nature walks are taken along trails through the forest, and village visits made to learn the traditions and customs of the local Melpa people.
