South Africa

Combining the more adventurous other-worldly destination of Madagascar with its lemurs, chameleons, varied landscapes and fascinating cultures with easy-going South Africa on safari in search of the Big Five and other wildlife of the African bush. The Madagascar section takes the classic overland route, exploring rainforest, tropical dry deciduous forest, canyonlands and spiny forest habitats with their associated wildlife, as well as a couple of nights by the beach.  Then hop over to South Africa for magical African safari experiences and a touch of luxury to end your holiday.  Marvellous!

 Day 
  1. Depart London.
  2. Arrive Jo'burg. Connect to Antananarivo (Tana), Madagascar. Met and transfer to Analamazaotra (Andasibe-Mantadia) National Park. Night walk to see nocturnal wildlife. O/n Andasibe Hotel, FB.
  3. Morning wildlife walk in Mantadia National Park. Nocturnal wildlife walk. O/n Andasibe Hotel, FB.
  4. Morning wildlife walk in the Perinet section of Analamazaotra rainforest. Then transfer to Antsirabe. O/n Couleur Café, FB.
  5. Drive through beautiful scenery to Ranomafana National Park with stops of interest. Noctunal wildlife walk. O/n Setam Lodge, FB.
  6. Morning and afternoon excursions in the lemur-rich rainforest of Ranomafana National Park. O/n Setam Lodge, FB.
  7. Transfer to Isalo National Park, stopping at Anja Park for ring-tailed lemurs and spectacular scenery.  O/n Isalo Rock Lodge, FB.
  8. Day of hiking in  Isalo National Park with its canyonland scenery and natural pools for swimming. O/n Isalo Rock Lodge, FB.
  9. Drive south to Tulear. Visit the Arboretum d'Antsokay for examples of Madagascar's spiny forest flora.  Fly to Tana. O/n Le Combava, BB.
  10. Visit Ambohimanga Royal Palace. Then depart Madagascar. Arrive Jo'burg, South Africa. O/n Life Hotel OR Tambo, BB.
  11. Charter flight to Skukuza.  Tfr lodge in Kruger National Park. O/n Rhino Post Safari Lodge, FB.
  12. Enjoy open vehicle game drives and other safari activities in Kruger National Park, including Rhino Post's private concession. O/n Rhino Post Safari Lodge, FB.
  13. Another day on safari in search of lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, rhino and other African wildlife in Kruger National Park. O/n Rhino Post Safari Lodge, FB.
  14. A final day of game drives in Kruger National Park. O/n Rhino Post Safari Lodge, FB.
  15. Transfer to the airport. Fly back to Jo'burg. Then depart South Africa.
  16. Arrive London.

Trip Tip: Add a few days to relax at the beach at Ifaty or Anakao in Madagascar from which you can also see more of the spiny forest, baobabs and endemic birds of the region.

Important Notes

IMPORTANT NOTE (1): Despite recent improvements, Madagascar still has some accommodation of a low standard, and a precarious infrastructure including unreliable domestic flights, poor communications and bad roads.  Many areas are isolated and far from medical and other services. Trails can be strenuous, campsites and park huts basic.  Bookings are only accepted if the client accepts Reef and Rainforest Tours has done everything in its power to ensure there are no difficulties, but has limited control over standards of equipment, availability of accommodation and other services, airline and hotel reservation policies, flight schedule changes or breakdowns in communications.

IMPORTANT NOTE (2): Each location generally has limited satisfactory hotels, and international and domestic flights often fill early. Because increases in hotel beds and flight seats have not kept up with visitor numbers, early booking for tailor-made tours is advisable to secure desired itineraries, particularly during high season (from late May to mid November). Some waitlisted nights are to be expected if booking less than 18 months in advance. Waitlists usually clear prior to departure.  We do our utmost to secure accommodation specified in your itinerary, but alternative accommodation will be offered and must be accepted by you in the unlikely event waitlisted nights do not clear or if the hotels over-book their rooms. Your booking is conditional on your understanding and acceptance of this situation.
