Costa Rica

Costa Rica MapsChristopher Columbus was the first European to set eyes on the densely forested coastline of a land he was later to name Costa Rica, or Rich Coast. Although resulting from the mistaken belief that there was abundant gold to be found, the name could equally have applied to the fabulous wealth of Costa Rica’s natural history.

With the highest biodiversity of any nation its size, this small section of the Central American isthmus boasts two dramatic coasts, Pacific and Caribbean, between which a volcanic mountain chain runs the length of the country.

The variety of habitats is astonishing, ranging from alpine vegetation to cloud forest, montane, pre-montane and lowland rainforest, and dry tropical deciduous forest.

The many various habitats contain a vast, fantastical array of bird, mammal, reptile, amphibian and invertebrate species, and the two coasts boast beautiful beaches, huge mangroves and extensive offshore waters teeming with marine life.

Coupled with a wide range of good accommodation, excellent service and sound infrastructure, Costa Rica meets the highest of natural history expectations.

When to Go

The conventional time to visit is between November and May, the “summer” months when the weather is usually drier. However, the “winter” months (April to August) can be equally attractive since, although there may be a higher incidence of rain, the forests are more lush, wildlife can be more active and visible and turtles visit the Caribbean coast. Costa Rica can be thought of as a year-round destination, although it is best to avoid September and October – the hurricane season.

By including the varied locations of Cano Negro, Arenal and Tamarindo with their  diverse range of sights and experiences, this itinerary aims to show some of the many facets which conspire to make Costa Rica so fascinating. Volcanoes, wetlands, forests, thermal mud pools, canopy adventures, Pacific beaches and plenty of birds and other wildlife combine to create a natural history holiday to cherish and remember for all time.  Find out more...
