Caribbean Coast

Much less extensive than the Pacific coast and often overlooked by visitors and locals alike, there are nevertheless many attractions to be discovered in the north and south of the Caribbean coast. For those wishing to visit Costa Rica in the European summer months, it is to be recommended for weather and wildlife reasons, since it can enjoy dry conditions while other parts of the country are wet.

Tortuguero National Park

The most popular location is Tortuguero in the north, a wildlife-rich, lowland rainforest of canals and waterways explored by foot and boat. The park is certainly one of the areas where wildlife is easily seen, including sloths, river turtles and capuchin and spider monkeys. Green and hawksbill turtles nest on the beaches from June to September, while leatherbacks and loggerheads come ashore from March to May. One cannot swim off the beaches since there are dangerous rip tides.

Manatus Hotel
The luxury option in Tortuguero with lovely rooms, spa, gym, art gallery and pool, this lodge is located canal-side and offers canoeing, zip-lining, pedal boats and the usual boat and walking tours within the national park.

Southern Caribbean Coast

Displaying a strong Afro-Caribbean influence, this is Costa Rica’s main backpacker base where many young surfers and travellers come to enjoy inexpensive accommodation, internet cafes and surfing beaches. For others, however, the draw is the unspoilt environment, with rainforest reaching down to the beach and prolific bird and animal life to be observed.

Friendly, small, German-run and found down a rough track off the main coast road, it has tidy bungalows, an open-sided main building and a private rainforest reserve in which zip-lining can be enjoyed and much wildlife found.
