The Jaguars of Taiama

Tailor Made Sample Itinerary No.8

Brazil Jaguar Tour

The jaguar is the third largest, and certainly one of the most elusive, of the world’s big cats. Few people, even veteran researchers, have had the privilege to encounter this top predator in the wild. Over the last few years Reef and Rainforest Tours have pioneered jaguar-watching tours in the Pantanal. Using a converted 19th Century ranch house as a base, this exciting new tour visits a remote part of the Paraguay River in the northern Pantanal which is little visited by international visitors.

Much of the time will be spent with a private guide exploring the Paraguay River as it splits and flows around the 11,200-hectare Taiama Biological Station, becoming the Bracinho River to the south of the island, and continuing as the Paraguay River to the north. Hunting and fishing are prohibited here which has resulted in good populations of caiman and capybaras – the jaguars favourite dry season prey – inhabiting the island. Consequently the area supports a high density of jaguars with an average of four jaguar sightings in previous years during a full day tour on the river. Taiama is also home to marsh deer, tapirs and medium-sized mammals such as howler monkeys.

The accommodation for this tour is at Fazenda Descalvados, a converted 19th Century ranch house on the banks of the Paraguay River, 30 minutes upstream from from the Taiama Biological Station. This 16,000 hectare historic working ranch, founded in 1886, contains the great house, settlers house, warehouse, church, square, corral and administration buildings. As well jaguar watching the Fazenda offers land safaris, horseback rides, night spotlighting, trail hikes and birding.

Besides the jaguar the UK-sized mosaic of seasonally-flooded savannahs and tropical forests of the Pantanal offer the finest wildlife viewing in Latin America. It harbours a record 82 species of large birds. Other wildlife includes giant otter, capybara, giant anteater, tapir, three monkey species, hyacinth macaw, 400 more bird species and tens of thousands of caimans.
