Kingdom of the Jaguar: The Wildlife of Brazil's Pantanal incorporating the SouthWild Jaguar Camp.
With the benefit of minimal internal travel, this exceptional private jaguar tour affords the best chance in all South America of spotting the elusive, powerful and majestic jaguar. In fact, since 2007 Reef and Rainforest clients have enjoyed over 300 jaguar sightings when following this itinerary or something very similar (see our selection of photos and reports opposite). 2010 proved to be our best year yet with 100% of Reef and Rainforest clients seeing jaguars well. All of these clients also saw giant river otters and most also encountered tapirs in addition to other Pantanal favourites such as capybara, caiman, hyacinth macaws, toco toucans, jabiru storks, monkeys, peccaries and deer. The astonishing record of jaguar sightings is testament to the incredible natural richness of the Pantanal and the expertise of the SouthWild Jaguar Camp (formally the Jaguar Research Centre). This exceptional tented camp (formally a series of houseboats) is located between a private jaguar reserve and the recently created 270,000-acre Meeting of the Waters State Park where a ban on hunting has led to an unusually high density of habituated jaguars. The camp has a dedicated team of guides, boatmen and jaguar spotters ensuring the very best jaguar sightings for its guests. Accompanied by a private English-speaking naturalist guide to ensure that you get the most out of each jaguar encounter, this is an intense itinerary for the serious wildlife enthusiast who deeply desires full immersion in one of the most prolific and rewarding wilderness regions to be found in the New World. NB: This is a tailor-made itinerary and can be modified to fit your exact plans, e.g. by adding another location such as the Amazon, Atlantic rainforest, Iguacu Falls or Rio de Janeiro. Read a report from our guides:"During the morning of Friday the 12th of June 2009, we had to leave the camp in a hurry at 7:30 am because our boatman Nego saw the male Jaguar "Wilson" lying on a sand beach one bend downstream from the [Jaguar Research Centre] tented camp. Once we got there, he stood on the beach and suddenly, when he noticed us in a small Jaguar observation boat, he stood up, looked at us and roared and then went behind some bushes. We could still see him, and he kept watching us. He did not appear calm and placid as he usually does (since June 2007, we have seen him more than 80 times on rivers near the camp). He may have been hungry that day. We waited for a while and there was no change. We decided to go a bit upstream to wait for him to come out into the open again. We stayed observing at the other side of the river, holding a tree branch to stay anchored on the opposite riverbank. Suddenly we heard a group of Giant Otters approaching us from upstream, swimming downstream in the direction of Wilson. It was a group of three otters, making sounds and communicating at us. The otters had not seen Wilson, and when they approached his sand beach, Wilson burst out of the bushes in a fraction of a second, jumping into the water to try to catch one of the otters. His attack failed, however, so he so he swam back to the beach and walked up onto the beach. To our surprise, the otters did not flee, but rather stayed in the water right in front of Wilson, provoking him over and over again for 20-30 minutes. Finally the otters tired of this game and swam away. Even after the otters finally disappeared downriver, Wilson remained on the beach a while longer and then slipped behind some bushes. We did not see him again until late that same afternoon, this time on the banks of the Cuiabá River. The [Reef and Rainforest Tours] guests were very excited by this great show and thanked the otters for the amazing spectacle." Wilson and the Otters:

"Well, you did ‘what it said on the tin’ – we searched for Jaguars and found an Ocelot!! ….. oh yes and 12 sightings of Jaguar!!!"
“8 jaguars in 3 days [at the Jaguar Research Centre]. Tonnes of new birds.”
“We had an incredible 13 sightings of Jaguars, which turned out to be nine different Jaguars. Two of the 9 were new for the Jaguar Research Center — so the guest who first saw them will have naming rights, as is the custom at the the Jaguar Research Center."
"One of my best trips ever…we saw six jaguars!"
“2hrs plus of jaguar sightings. Trans Pantanal road was excellent.”
“I thoroughly enjoyed the tour [wildlife highlights] included two jaguars, puma. Ocelot, hyacinth macaws & numerous birds” Miss P N - Leicester
“Exceptional trip, Lord D suggested it was even better than his imperial tiger hunt” Mr C T - London "Yes, I am back from a wonderfully amazing realisation of a dream to see a jaguar. Too good to put into words. Everything went like clockwork - Sao Paulo airport is a bit of a maze. I landed up pretty well having a one to one trip with my guides. Cristalino was magical with American guides Will and Gill Carter, very much a 'Birders' paradise, but I loved it. Then I went on to the Jaguar Research Centre for what turned out to be 3 1/2 days of pure heaven. 'Fisher', my guide was brilliant and we managed to see Wilson, Hugo, Duda (on 3 occasions) and an unidentified cat. The young Duda was amazing, we followed her for a whole morning moving along the river bank and then in the evening actually saw her swimming across it. Wonderful memories."
“We really enjoyed every aspect [of the Jaguar Research Centre]... highlights included jaguar attacking giant otters near the camp (we have a couple of photos of this amazing behaviour!). Harpy eagle chick at Hotel Amazonica and adult at Cristalino. Total of 6 jaguar sightings. Total of nearly 300 spp. Birds including 5 spp. Macaws. Seeing an as yet undescribed species of poison dart frog.”
"Brazil was fabulous…. The Pantanal was also a successful trip and we were well rewarded at the Jaguar Research Centre with jaguar sightings and good pics. We would happily recommend the holiday to hard core wildlife enthusiasts. Many thanks for your help making this all possible."
"Well planned itinerary giving appropriate time at each venue.... 7 sightings of 4 different jaguars including one for over an hour in the open with excellent light [at the Jaguar Research Centre] exceeded our expectations. Thank you very much for your helpful organisation throughout. It proved a memorable holiday."
“3 jaguars!! on two separate days. On the first sightings, guide driver and self sat in the boat from 12.35 till 6am watching Geoff [the jaguar] and his sister Estelle. On the second, two days later, I was able to sit on the opposite bank with my tripod and got perfectly steady film”
“This trip has provided us with a fantastic introduction to South America and Brazil in particular. [highlights included] our first sighting of jaguars on our boat trip to the Jaguar Research Centre - a male jaguar casually lying in the sun on a sand bank - subsequently renamed by my wife at the [Jaguar Research Centre] owner’s request”
“Absolutely loved everything about the Jaguar Research Centre. The tented accommodation was great and good fun. The cook was large and jolly and looked after T well- the food was excellent here, and she had the most difficult conditions to contend with... 4 jaguar sightings. The first was at night, a fisherman called in so we took off down the river at brakeneck speed in the dark, found the other boats, and saw 'Hugo'. The other 3 were in daylight... the highlight was following Mrs Butterfly hunting along the river bed. Had some good otter sightings. Very good boatman.”
“The experience at the Pantanal Wildlife Centre & Jaguar Research Centre was outstanding. Our guide Benedicto was first class - he knew all the fauna, especially the birds and clearly loved them and could not wait to show us everything he knew. We saw the Tapirs at the mango tree (twice), coati, too many birds to list all, at pace which was perfect. At the Jaguar Research Centre the staff did an outstanding job and, OK the camp was not luxurious but WHO CARES? when you have a chance to see the jaguar, and we in fact saw seven. ALL of which were fantastic views, not just a blip in the distance.” |
