Barrier Reef & Coral Cays Testimonials

Belize Barrier Reef & Cays

Extending more than 185 miles north to south, the Belize Barrier Reef, a World Heritage Site, is second only to Australia’s in length. The cays (pronounced "keys") are coral islands which stud the entire length of the reef. Three of the five coral atolls in the Caribbean Sea are located off the coast of Belize: Lighthouse Reef, Glovers Reef and Turneffe Islands.

Ambergris Cay

Located just off the tip of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula, it is Belize’s largest island at 25 miles long and just over a mile wide. The barrier reef is only a quarter of a mile from the beach, making diving and snorkelling easy and accessible. The only town is San Pedro, home to the majority of the island’s population, as well as bars, restaurants and hotels. Just offshore lie the popular diving/snorkelling sites of Hol Chan Marine Reserve and Shark and Ray Alley - over 160 species of fish have been identified in the reserve, along with nearly 40 species of coral.

Victoria House
An elegant colonial-style resort located approximately two miles south of the main town, offering very comfortable accommodation, beautiful surroundings, a good beach, dive operation and lovely pool.

South Water Cay

Approximately 14 miles east of Dangriga and forming part of a marine reserve, the 15-acre island is one of the most beautiful on the reef. One can snorkel right from the beach, visit other cays or fin to the edge of the shelf where the  deep ocean begins. There are just three properties on the island, which is very quiet and peaceful – don’t go if you want nightlife or jet skis.

Pelican Beach Resort
Situated on the lovely southern end of the cay, with its coral sand beach and coconut palms, the detached bungalows and rooms are simple  but comfortable and use sustainable technology such as solar power, composting toilets and captured rainwater. There is excellent snorkelling right off the beach, and diving can be arranged.

Glovers Reef

Consisting of five coral islands lying 36 miles off the coast in mid-ocean, Glovers Reef is the smallest and most southerly of the three coral atolls in Belize. It has been declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO and a National Protected area by the government.  The waters around the islands provide superb diving and ample opportunity to see turtles, dolphins and schools of flying fish as well as many seabirds including pelicans and frigatebirds.
